Walking Into Tallinn's Town Hall Square

Visiting
Tallinn is a wonderful experience. Some folks think it is
the best of the best on a Baltic cruise. While St.
Petersburg is amazing, Tallinn is equally enjoyable for its
quaint medieval architecture and history. While most ships
offer round trip shuttle service into Tallinn, it is an easy
walk and very enjoyable to boot. Here is how to do it.
Tallinn From the Ship
Because
Tallinn's old section is a walled city, one must first find
an entrance to be able to penetrate its treasures. If you go
to the sun deck of your ship and look out at the old section
(above) you will see the tall smoke stack to the right of
the city. This is your landmark as you walk into own, as the
entrance to the city is quite close to it.
Leaving the Port in Tallinn
As you
leave the port, you will see you ship fade into the
distance. Keep you eye on thesmoke stack and follow the road
that will take you there. Because of the way the port is
laid out, this part is a little confusing is you don't keep
your eye on the smoke stack.
The Intersection Before the
Entrance
Just past
the smoke stack you will come to a major intersection. Be
extra cautious crossing this intersection, as several
streets converge here and the traffic can be confusing.
Continue to walk toards the spire and round structure to its
right.

the Right
As you
approach the structure that you see above, the entrance to
the walled city is hidden to the right.

You will
then be presented with the entrance to the old section of
Tallinn.

Once inside
the walls continue up the road past several shops and
residences.

As you
continue up the road, you pass some interesting restaurants
and bars, as well as some shops. This is just a hint as to
what is coming. Keep on walking.
The Entrance to Tallinn's
Town Hall Square
When you
see the pink building shown above turn left between the
clock and the pink building. This will take you to the
entrance to Town Hall Square.

Square
You will
see the walkway that leads to the tunnel that will take you
into Town Hall Square. This is the epicenter of Tallinn's
Old Section and all areas can be accessed from here.
Tallinn's Town Square
You will
see streets emptying into Town Square coming from all
directions. You can explore all of these streets and will be
treated to some fantastic sights. To return to the ship,
simply reverse the route back. While there are other
entrances into the walled city, they can leave you far away
from the ship and may become confusing because of the way
Tallinn is laid out.
