Overview:

A Barbary Ape and Ship
Docked in Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a fun and
easy to visit port that has lots to offer. While
strategically placed at the mouth of the Mediterranean
Sea with a history of battles that goes back centuries,
it is its unique flavor that makes it so wonderful.
Gibraltar enjoys excellent Mediterranean weather, but
may get a bit of rain in the fall and winter months.
Also, a phenomenon known as "Levanter" clouds may cover
the rock making it difficult to see it and see from it.
The local currency is the Gibraltar pound, which is on
parity with the British pound. Both are interchangeable
in Gibraltar. You may obtain currency at any ATM located
throughout Gibraltar, but be aware that no one will
exchange coins outside of Gibraltar, so make sure that
you spend them or exchange them before departing the
port.

Highlights:

The Rock of Gibraltar
Of
course, the Rock of Gibraltar is the main reason to
visit Gibraltar. And, it is impressive to say the least.
The rock houses museums and numerous historical caves
that were used in various wars and sieges. Military
buffs will be enthralled by its history.

The Rock of Gibraltar
Ariel Tram Station
By
walking down Main Street and through the eastern gates,
past the park you will see the Rock of Gibraltar ariel
tram station. You must first purchase a ticket before
getting in line for the next car up the rock. You can
purchase a one-way ticket, or round trip. It is quite
possible to walk down from the top alond an interesting
trail, but the ride both ways is well worth it. While
there is a half-way station where one can get off the
tram, I suggest that you stay on for the full ride to
the top. Note that there will be tour guide trying to
sell you tours by the tram station. Don't buy one unless
you really want to. The Rock is easily done on your own.

The View From The Rock
is Breathtaking
Once
you get to the top the view is absolutely breathtaking.
You can see the cruise ship docked right in the center
of the picture with the downtown area well defined.
There is a coffee shop, a little curios shop and some
pay magnifying telescopes to use if you want. But, it is
the view of the rock itself that is so intriguing.

A Barbary Ape on the
Rock
But, it
is the Barbary Apes that roam the rock that steal the
show. Make no mistake, these apes are wild and will
steal your stuff if given a chance. They will also bite
you if they feel threatened in any way. Make sure that
you are not wearing shiny jewelry or have loose things
that might look interesting to the apes when visiting
them. They will make a play for it and probably succeed
in getting away with it. NEVER feed them!

Barbary Apes High Above
the Mediterranean Sea
You
can't help but take dozens of pictures of these
wonderful creatures as they scamper around the rock.
While they are not really apes at all, but monkeys,
their legend permeates Gibraltar's rich history.

The Rock of Gibraltar
Ariel Tram Car
Be
aware that the tram car that takes you up and down the
mountain is not very large at all and it tends to be
packed with people, as there is always a line to go up.

Riding Back Down is
Just as Fun
The
trip back down the mountain is just as fun as the trip
up. Try to get to the front of the car for some
excellent shots of the area.

Alameda Gardens
On your
way back to Gibraltar's Main Street you will pass the
lovely gardens that are well worth a visit. Because of
Gibraltar's unique location, just about every kind of
plant known to mankind can be grown here. The gardens
feature several rare plants in a natural setting.

The Apes are Amusing
and Fascinating
While
there are some museums, a Governor's House and such in
Gibraltar, it i all about the Rock and the Barbary Apes.
They are GREAT!
Off the
Beaten Path:
Not mush
opportunity to go too far off the beaten path in
Gibraltar. But, it is an enjoyable day.
Dining
and Drinking Suggestions:

Sidewalk Cafes on Main
Street
Gibraltar
features several pubs and sidewalk cafes serving British
fare, including fish and chips. Of course, a pint of ale
is in order with your meal.
Must Do
List:
I would
certainly give a visit to the top of the Rock of
Gibraltar a "must do" rating.
