Campbell River, Canada Port Review
Campbell River On Your Own Shore Excurison

Overview

Campbell River is located on Vancouver Island about 160 miles north of the city of Victoria. It is known as the Salmon Capital of the World and is a lovely beach community offering excellent fishing and other outdoor sports.

Cruise Port Location and Information

Ships dock right at Campbell River's northern edge at the Campbell River cruise ship terminal.

Exploring On Your Own

While one of Campbell River's main shopping centers is ajacent to the cruise terminal and within easy walking distance, the main part of town is quite a ways from the ship. Because of the lack of infrastructure close by, this is a port that I would recommend either taking a ship's shore excursion or having something pre-booked before your arrival. There are no local tour operators and very limited taxis at the port.

Shopping Tips

Shopping at the Port Of Campbell River

The shopping in Campbell River is limited to the tent stores that are put up when a ship arrives. Upon our arrival in Campbell River, the mayor was there to greet each passenger as they debarked the ship. There was also a small band and several of the shops were open.

Campbell River Shopping

There were a lot of local native selection of dolls, jewelry, carvings and such. For the most part, the shopping was anti climatic after the major Alaskan ports that we had visited. The shopping center and marina that adjoins the cruise port offers chain stores much like any shopping mall in Canada or the U. S..

Port Highlights

If you are there during salmon season, by all means arrange for a salmon trip. Steelhead fishing is also legendary in the rivers around Campbell River. Most ships will offer tours to Strathcona Park, a huge wilderness park that will take your breath away. Many eco-adventures are offered by local operators such as hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, river rafting, snorkeling, bear and whale watching but these must be booked in advance of your arrival and they will generally arrange for transportation for you.

Off the Beaten Path

Nothing that I can think of.

Dining & Drinking Suggestions

None that I have found

“Must Do” List

If you wanted a day to relax on the ship, Campbell River may be the perfect opportunity.
